Even Start in Texas
Even Start Family Literacy is a federal program funded through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Title I, Part B, Subpart 3. The last year that Even Start was funded in the federal budget was the 2010-2011 school year. Texas Education Agency allowed existing 2010-2011 Even Start programs to extend their grants through August 31, 2012 to expend any unused federal funds. Federal Even Start legislation continues to exist under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, but in the absence of a federal appropriation, the program is inactive.
This site documents Even Start's success in Texas from 1988 through 2012. For highlights, read this retrospective article published in the October/November 2012 issue of TCALL's Texas Adult & Family Literacy Quarterly.
