Adult Education Resources
The National Institute for Literacy
The
National Institute for Literacy's activities to strengthen literacy across
the lifespan are authorized by the U.S. Congress under two laws, the
Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA)
in the Workforce Investment Act and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
The AEFLA directs the Institute to provide national leadership regarding
literacy, coordinate literacy services and policy, and serve as a national
resource for adult education and literacy programs. The NCLB law directs
the Institute to disseminate information on scientifically based reading
research pertaining to children, youth, and adults as well as information
about development and implementation of classroom reading programs based
on the research.
National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL)
The
mission of the National Center for Family Literacy is to create educational
and economic opportunity for the most at-risk children and parents. NCFL’s
services include professional development for practitioners who work
in children’s education, adult education, English as a
Second Language, and related literacy fields; model program development
through our many ground-breaking initiatives; policy and advocacy support
to sustain and expand literacy services for families; and the Family
Literacy Alliance, a membership program. NCFL relies on the generous
partnerships of many individuals, corporations and foundations to accomplish
our mission.
National Reporting System
(NRS)
The
National Reporting System for Adult Education (NRS) is an outcome-based
reporting system for the state-administered, Federally funded adult education
program.
NRS Online
NRS
Online is the training site for the (NRS). This site includes training
courses designed for adult education program administrators that explain
NRS requirements and courses designed to improve the quality of NRS data
collection. You can also use this site as a reference source for the
NRS.
American Institutes for Research
Founded
in 1946, the American Institutes for Research (AIR)
is a not-for-profit corporation with a long history of accomplishment.
AIR's staff of more than 850 professionals performs basic and applied
research, provides technical support, and conducts analyses based on
methods of the behavioral and social sciences.

National Center for Educational Statistics
(NCES)
NCES
is the primary federal entity to collect and analyze data that are
related to education in the United States and other nations.
The National Association of Urban Literacy Councils/Literacy
USA
Literacy USA promotes and strengthens literacy coalitions as they create
literate communities, thereby enhancing the quality of the lives of individuals
and the vitality of our society.
Center for Applied Linguistics
(CAL)
CAL is a private,
non-profit organization: a group of scholars and educators who use the findings
of linguistics and related sciences in identifying and addressing language-related
problems. CAL carries out a wide range of activities including research, teacher
education, analysis and dissemination of information, design and development
of instructional materials, technical assistance, conference planning, program
evaluation, and policy analysis.
Center for Adult
English Language Acquisition (CAELA)
Funded at the Center for Applied Linguistics by the U.S. Department
of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education for the period
of October 2004 to September 2007, the purpose of this center is to
assist states with emerging populations who are learning English as
a second language (ESL). Center staff work with state representatives
so that they will have the capacity to promote the English language
learning and academic achievement of adults learning English.
The
Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL)
The
Texas Association of Literacy and Adult Education
(TALAE)
hosts regional and annual meetings, where local directors have an opportunity
to network.
The OneStar Foundation
The mission of OneStar Foundation is based on the belief that volunteerism
is a core value of good citizenship and is a vital component of public
policy. To this end, OneStar will support and promote volunteerism and
will challenge all Texans to become active community volunteers, with
the understanding that less costly government requires the individual
leadership of service to others.
Literacy Texas
Literacy Texas
is an association with the mission of connecting nonprofit literacy programs
that serve the educational needs of adult Texans who will benefit from
individual literacy instruction primarily given by trained volunteers.
Literacy Texas holds an annual conference to provide training and networking opportunities
for its members.
