Adult Education Administrator's Manual Revised August 2007
Instructional Services The Adult Education Cooperative SystemIntensity of Instruction affects learning. Programs may offer more intensive classes that meet for more hours for fewer weeks, while in other programs classes may be spread over a longer period of time but meet fewer hours at a time. The type of class that is most effective depends on student needs, literacy levels and curriculum offered. Multi-level Classes affects the instructional environment and student learning gains. Although teaching multilevel classes is challenging, many programs must organize classes in this way due to limited resources or low enrollments at some levels or sites. Multilevel classes with a large number of low-level learners may depress educational advancements. Although multilevel classes are the norm in many adult education programs due to limited resources, instruction is difficult when students’ literacy levels are too diverse within the class or when a program has too many such classes. Maintaining student interest and motivation is challenging when student skill levels vary widely and low retention may result. Open Entry/Managed Enrollment —Many programs have had an open enrollment policy; however, with the emphasis on accountability and more intense instruction, many programs are moving toward managed enrollment to improve enrollment and retention. Managed enrollment consists of scheduled days of enrollment and possibly waiting lists. Previous | Table of Contents | Next
