Goal/Objective

To share something important you have learned through your reading and exploring.

Lesson Outline

Writing about literature is one way to express your thoughts and feelings about a piece of literature. Ideas for reviews usually come from the main elements of literature.plot, characterization, setting and theme. Base your ideas on careful reading of the text. Present the results of your work in a carefully planned essay.

Activity

Search the Internet for a piece of literature to read and ultimately to write about. Determine plot, characterization, setting and theme. Use Handout: Basic Collection Sheet to gather your details.

Extension Activity

Begin reviewing literature read in class using this same methodology and keep a journal of reviews.

Students learn to utilize the Internet as a source for researching in addition to the traditional methods. Students also develop higher order thinking skills as they learn to organize their thoughts on paper and apply them to the writing process.

Introduction

Say: We have been learning about the writing process and how to use the Internet for research. We will continue to use and build upon those skills with this new activity. We will continue to combine and build upon those skills.the writing process used in conjunction with reading literature located on the Internet. Let's surf!

Main Activity

Say: Writing about literature is a way to express your thoughts and feelings about literature on a piece of paper. We will be discussing several concepts necessary for understanding literature . plot, characterization, setting, and theme.
Ask:
Does anyone know what these terms mean?
Say:
Let's talk about what these terms mean.
Do: give student "Four Elements of Literature"
Say:
Each of you will locate a piece of literature on the Internet to read and write about. Once you make your selection begin gathering details on the Handout: "Basic Collection Sheet". After collecting your information using concepts learned in the Basic Writing Process you will begin drafting your essay.

Plot ~ The Action of a Story

  • How is suspense built into a story? (Consider the important events leading up to the climax.)
  • The climax (the important event) changes the story in an effective way.in a believable way.in an unbelievable way.
  • The ending is surprising.predictable.unbelievable.
  • Are there any twist or reversals in the plot? What do they add to the story?

Characterization ~ The People or the Animals in a Story

  • The main character changes from ________ to _______ by the end of the story.
  • Certain forces or circumstances ~ people, events, setting, or ideas make the characters act as they do.
  • _________ is the main Characters personality trait.

Setting ~ The Time and Place of the Story

  • The setting helps to make the story exciting.
  • The setting has an important effect on the main character.
  • The setting (in a historical novel) has increased my knowledge of a certain time in history.

Theme ~ The Author's Statement or Lessons About Life

  • Ambition, courage, jealousy, greed, happiness.
  • The book showed me what it was like to be.
  • The moral "Don't judge a book by it's cover", "Haste makes waste", "Hard work pays off", is developed in the title of the book.
