Activity Title - Parts of Speech Review

Introduction

Say: How many of you can identify the parts of speech in a sentence? Today we are going to do a human diagram of a sentence and how to identify the concepts of a modifier and helping verbs.

Main Activity

Distribute the index cards with words and create a sentence. Identify the simple subject of the sentence by asking, "Who or what the sentence is about?" Identify the simple predicate by asking, "What is the subject doing in this sentence?" Next identify the direct object. As each are being identified, the student holding the word steps forward. If a helping verb is in the sentence, have the student with the helping verb card step forward and stand next to the action verb in the sentence.Go back to the person holding the subject card. Identify any modifiers. Have each person holding a card that modifies the subject move behind the subject. Then move on to the person who is holding the predicate card(s). Identify any modifiers. Have each person holding a card that modifies the predicate stand behind the predicate. As students become more proficient, add prepositional phrases and identify the object of the preposition and what the phrase modifies.

Closure/Conclusion

This activity brings language out of the books and into their hands.
