Are We There Yet?

Goal/Objective

Student will be able to apply and calculate distance, rate, and time using the distance formula in real-life situations.

Lesson Outline -

Prior Knowledge Needed

Student should know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Student should know how to substitute numbers for variables.

Introduction

Roll-playing activity

  • Husband/wife/three children, ages 5, 7, 11 and dog traveling in a station wagon from Houston to New Orleans.
  • Students will act out a typical setting of what goes on when traveling long-distance by car. Five-minute dialogues with the ending "Are we there yet?"

Activity

Instructor will model word problems that involve finding the distance, rate, and time. Using the overhead projector, the instructor will show a word problem and ask open-ended questions to allow the student to determine what is known, relevant, and to be found.

Extension / Enrichment Activity

 

Evaluation Activity

Create a ten-question test involving distance, rate, time.

Real-Life Connection

Ask student to calculate distance, time, and rate the next time they travel

Bridges Accommodations

Working in groups and giving extra time to finish activity.

Benchmark Assessment

Passing is defined as 80% of the test.
