Goal/Objective

Student solves the word problems that create decimals.

Lesson Outline

Prior Knowledge Needed

Place value, whole numbers, reading comprehension, four basic operations of math, use of the calculator.

  • Calculators
  • Stick pins
  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Dry eraser board

Introduction

Using a visual atlas map of Texas, use stick pins to designate a starting/ending point (Houston/border). Take the colored marker and highlight the route. Using a toy car, follow the route while reading the problem. Convert the given miles per gallon into a decimal form.

Activity

Student will trace the route, demonstrating comprehension of miles traveled/amount of gas used to get miles per gallon before converting answer into decimal form.

Extension / Enrichment Activity

Additional problems such as:

  1. How much did the gas cost?
  2. Solve the time, distance and velocity using the formulas given

Written answers turned in.
