Activity Title

Irregular Verb Forms

Goal/Objective

Students will use the appropriate forms of irregular verbs.

Lesson Outline

Prior Knowledge Needed

Knowledge of verbs.

Materials, Text, Media, Handouts

List of irregular verbs with present, past and past participle.

Introduction

Emphasize the importance of proper use of verbs in conversation and writing. (We often write the way we speak!) Our communication skills reflect the level of our education and are often the first impression we make on others).

Vocabulary
  • Parts of the letter: heading, greeting, body,
  • Homonyms such as your, you're, there, their
Activity
  1. Around the World - use the three forms of irregular verbs as you go around the room using the format -
    • Today I go.
    • Yesterday I went.
    • Often I have gone.
    (Throw in a few regular verbs just for comparison).
  2. Practice with book - Breakthrough - Ex. 24 - 29
Extension / Enrichment Activity

Incorporate writing by creating a short paragraph using several irregular verbs in the present tense. Rotate papers - next student writes in the past. Rotate again - write the paragraph in the past progressive.

Evaluation Activity

100 Club Test

After much oral practice and drill, present a teacher made test with the present tense of irregular verbs, students must write the past tense and the past participle with helping verb. Those who receive the grade of 100 will be honored on a poster in class.

Real-Life Connection

Role-play a job interview where student must answer several questions using irregular verb forms.

Bridges Accommodations

Pair off students into groups of two's and edit each other's conversations. The student can use written and oral communication, as well as use a checklist of the proper, common and irregular verb.

Benchmark Assessment

Quiz of 10 irregular verbs. Could be closed format.
