Activity Title - Finding a Job Through Classified Ads

Lesson Outline

Prior Knowledge Needed

Reasons people work, inventory of personal and professional skills, career planning, understanding requirements and abilities for different jobs, comparing different job qualifications and benefits.

Materials, Text, Media, Handouts

  • Newspapers
  • Trade papers
  • Three different types of applications

Introduction

Hand out newspapers to each student. Have students see if they can find the Classified Ads. After a few minutes explain how to look on the front of the newspaper to see where the classified section is located. Now make sure all of the students have located the Classified Ads and have found the Help Wanted section.

Now discuss with students abbreviations and terms used in classified ads. Make a list on the board. Also, discuss with students the different types of applications. Go over the various types.

Activity

  • Each students need to find five jobs they would like to apply for
  • Students then need to make a list on a separate sheet of paper answering the following questions:
  • WHAT (what type of job am I applying for)
  • WHERE (where do I apply for this job)
  • WHEN (when is the deadline for applications)
  • WHO (who do I need to apply to)
  • HOW (how do I apply)

 

Extension / Enrichment Activity

  • Have students complete a basic application form
  • Review other types of applications used in applying for jobs

 

Evaluation Activity

Have students actually apply for three of the five jobs they found in the Classified Ads.

Real-Life Connection

  • How to locate job openings using print materials
  • How to actually apply for jobs they are interested in
  • How to read classified ads
  • How to match your skills to those required for jobs

 

Bridges Accommodations

Have magnifiers to help vision impaired students read the ads.

Benchmark Assessment

Give test on: name three places you can find ads for employment, how do you match required qualifications to your job skills, name three ways you can apply for a job, abbreviation/vocabulary test
