Students will recognize, spell, define and use homonyms, antonyms and synonyms.

Lesson Outline

Prior Knowledge Needed

4th grade reading level.

Materials, Text, Media, Handouts

  • Three word list handouts (i.e. homonyms list, etc.
  • Dictionaries (English and Spanish)
  • Thesaurus
  • Pen and paper
  • Overhead and blackboard optional.

Introduction

Model by teacher.

Vocabulary

Included in comprehensive word list.

Activity

Complete word list during class time.

Extension / Enrichment Activity

Create games using homonyms, synonyms and antonyms, like password and bingo.

Evaluation Activity

One student – generated activity, e.g. create sentences, draw pictures.

Student should be able to complete 80% of a teacher - generated worksheet.

Real-Life Connection

Reading magazines, newspapers (cartoons) and listening to TV news.

Bridges Accommodations

Using blue paper, font: arial 14+ for word list handout.

Benchmark Assessment

Same as evaluation activity.
