Goal/Objective

Using appropriate capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, students will draft, revise and edit an original letter.

Lesson Outline

Prior Knowledge Needed

Knowledge of proper format for friendly letter, and rules of capitalization and punctuation.

Ability to construct complete sentences.

Teacher Generated Letter - "Writing A Personal Letter" Breakthrough & Language p. 141

Introduction

Using several short letters/notes, read and discuss the purpose of a friendly letter.

(Some letters can be notes of encouragement/praise to individuals in the class).

Vocabulary
  • Parts of the letter, heading, greeting, body,
  • homonyms such as your, you're, there, their
Activity
  1. Discuss with students elements that make a good letter.
  2. Review capitalization and punctuation rules by having students edit a teacher-generated letter. Discuss rules as needed.
  3. Breakthrough p.141 - Students generate a friendly letter.
Extension / Enrichment Activity

Write a letter to the editor discussing your opinion on a current issue. Send the letter to a local newspaper.

Evaluation Activity

Students will edit and revise their letters with 80% accuracy.

Real-Life Connection
  1. Write a friendly letter to a friend and mail the letter to him/her.
  2. E-mail a letter to someone.
  3. Write a letter on the computer and use spell check to make corrections.
Bridges Accommodations

Group LEP students with more advanced students in the ABE class to assist in peer editing.

Benchmark Assessment

Using the format for a friendly letter, students will edit capitalization, punctuation, and correct spelling of homonyms.
