Activity Title - Water Surface tension/toothpick hook

Area/Skill
GED Science
LCP P

Cognitive Skill Level
Writing a check
Correlation to Framework
Standard 3.00
Benchmark 3.03

Goal/Objective

Demonstrate that the surface tension of water is great enough to cling together and be pulled across wax paper surface.

Lesson Outline

Prior Knowledge Needed -

Magnetic force; how magnets attract certain materials.

Water is H2O; polarity is what makes the atoms cling together.

Materials, Text, Media, Handouts

  • Pan or dish
  • Water
  • Toothpicks
  • Detergent
  • Baby powder

Introduction

Have students test the strength of water surface by doing experiments with water and detergent to see if one molecule can destroy the other.

For example:

Sprinkle baby power over the surface of water and introduce the molecules of detergent, with a toothpick, to test the breaking of the water surface.

Vocabulary

  • Magnetism
  • Tension
  • Polarity (-+)
  • Hydrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Positive
  • Negative
  • Strength of surface
  • Broad or wide

Activity

Drops of water on wax paper, oiled surface, will destroy surface tension of water.

Pull water across the paper with a toothpick to demonstrate that the water molecules stay together.

When you introduce the toothpick dipped in the detergent to the water, the water spreads all over the paper. We can also see that the water soaks into the wax paper.

Extension / Enrichment Activity

Have the student do other experiments or activities to practice the lesson on surface tension.

These activities can be done for homework using materials from home.

Evaluation Activity

Participation and group discussion.

Develop a ten-question test related to the framework of the lesson. If the student has 80% correct, we can say that the student has accomplished the measure.

Real-Life Connection

How soil is released from fabrics and dirty dishes.

Bridges Accommodations

Able to work in-groups.

Able to work alone at home.

Learning the strength of different molecules.

Learning a periodic table of elements.

How dirt is removed from clothing items.

Benchmark Assessment

Students most learn at least 80% of the concept of measure.

Each student must be able to analyze and interpret process.
