Goal/Objective

Students will make inferences based on reading selections and will determine word meanings using context clues.

Artemis Flint: Detective Breakthrough in Critical Reading - GED Reading

Introduction

Teacher could dress as a detective. Role-play a puzzling situation, maybe looking for a mystery object. Give a few clues; let the students help solve the mystery.

Vocabulary

Define: Inference, Context clues, Outcome, Predictions

Activity

  1. Define and discuss vocabulary, predicting influence, and context clues.
  2. Read mystery story from Artemis Flint, students take notes on clues. In groups discuss "Who Done It?" and supporting evidence.
  3. Check answers, compare evidence.
  4. Relate detective work to two areas: a. using context clues to get meaning and b. to draw logical conclusions based on actual experience.
  5. Student will complete exercise and oral discussion from Contemporary Reading Book, article at church bombing in Georgia or Alabama.

Extension / Enrichment Activity

Compare news story with editorial on same subject.

List facts and opinions to see the relevance of details.

Evaluation Activity

Refer to number 5 listed above.

Real-Life Connection

Show that logical conclusion can be wrong when based on faulty or misleading experience.

Drawing conclusions based on gossip or biased information can be dangerous.
