Activity Read the letter to determine the main idea. Identify literary techniques: mood, characterization, etc. Identifying supporting details. |

Evaluation Activity Have the students review the concept of being able to determine the main idea by completing the following exercises in the Steck-Vaughn Evaluation Skill book pages 59, 61, 63, 66. |

Real-Life Connection Reading the Dear John letter to determine the main idea. |
Bridges Accommodations Allow enough time for students who are a little slower. |
Benchmark Assessment The students will be given 10 questions. They will have to master eight out of the ten to be able to progress to the next level. |
