The students will need to have achieved previous standards from ABE and pre-GED.

  • Dear John letter
  • Steck-Vaughn GED Skills Book pgs. 29, 30, 35, Skills Reading Lit pgs. 21-23

Introduction

Determining the main idea is a part of everyday life. Everyone will eventually have to utilize this skill on their jobs and within their homes and families.

Vocabulary

Activity

Read the letter to determine the main idea.

Identify literary techniques: mood, characterization, etc.

Identifying supporting details.

Extension / Enrichment Activity

 

Evaluation Activity

Have the students review the concept of being able to determine the main idea by completing the following exercises in the Steck-Vaughn Evaluation Skill book pages 59, 61, 63, 66. What following exercises???

Real-Life Connection

Reading the Dear John letter to determine the main idea.

Bridges Accommodations

Allow enough time for students who are a little slower.

Benchmark Assessment

The students will be given 10 questions. They will have to master eight out of the ten to be able to progress to the next level.
