Activity/Procedures

Warm-Up Activity (15-30 min. suggested time)

Divide students in to groups. Access prior knowledge by having the groups discuss the different types of phones they use at home, work and away.

Extension: Discuss pros and cons of various types of phones.

Introduction: (1 to 1 ½ hours suggested time)

State the lesson’s objective. Introduce vocabulary. Ask the groups to point out using the "realia" brought in to class by the teacher, or by pointing to the photograph of the phones the types of telephones they used. Model for them and ask them to respond orally to the whole class ... in the following way:

I use a _________ Phone when I am at/in the _____________.

Extension: He uses a ... at his ___________________.

She uses a ... at her _____________________.

They use a ... at their ___________________.

(Name of group member) uses a ... his/her ___________________

Presentation: (1 to 1 ½ hours suggested time)

Continue having the students work in their groups to create a poster board presentation. The poster board should illustrate the various types of phones and each should be labeled. Each phone should have listed underneath the label that phone’s pros and cons. They will present to the group by introducing themselves individually as members and then each other as members. Ex. "Hello, my name is Claudia. This is Hector. This is Paul and this is Rose."

Practice: (1 hour)

Individually students should demonstrate either by using the "realia" brought in by the teacher, or using the photographs a "how to" guide to using each phone. The "how to" should include step-by-step instructions to take a person from picking up the phone to completing a call. The "how to" process could be developed as a group, but should be demonstrated individually for assessment.

Evaluation/Assessment

Teacher observation of individual practice of "how to" exercise.

Application

Apply skills learned in their day-to-day activities outside of class. Encourage students to take a risk outside of their comfort zone. Ask them to informally report orally how the learned skill affected them.

Grammatical Focus

Use of adjectives (pros and cons)

Use of common and proper nouns (Introductions of self and group members. Names and types of phones)
