Warm-Up

1. Show pictures of different types of houses. Ask learners to brainstorm and to list on the board types of housing.

2. Have learners discuss different rooms, fixtures, and appliances. What housing features are most important to you?

Presentation

Application I

1. Using the KWL Strategy (Ask students what they know about buying a house)

2. Have learners to open their book to page 127. Ask questions about the picture. Example ...

a. Who are Al and Yolette talking to?

b. Why do you think they are standing in front of this house?

c. What do you think Al is thinking about?

d. What questions would you have about this house?

3. Have students to brainstorm things that Al and Yolette should consider before buying a house. Example: job location, commuting distance, size of house and family, school district, neighborhood, price and interest rates.

Check for Understanding:

Go over KWL Chart: Review what they already know and what they have learned.

Application II

1. Have students to compare and contrast the pros and cons of buying a house instead of renting.

2. Have students to sit in groups of 3's and brainstorm the advantages and disadvantages of owning a house compared to renting a house.

3. Have students to write on the blackboard their finding.

4. Ask students what do they think are the biggest expenses for homeowners? Example: federal taxes, home repairs, interest rates, home insurance, legal responsibility according to personal injury. List responses on the blackboard.

5. Have students to determine who have the better advantage for each of these categories: tax advantage, home equity, and appreciation of property value. List finding on blackboard

Evaluation/Assessment

Students will show the pros and cons of owning a house to renting a house using debate team's role-play.
