  • class set of copies of the blue pages’
  • emergency phone numbers
  • any materials provided by police, fire, and EMR departments
  • overhead transparencies of emergency and non-emergency situations (download of Internet).

Local guest speakers: police, fire, and emergency medical response department personnel.

Objective

Student will be able to call 911 and request operator assistance.

Vocabulary

emergency, life threatening, accident, tablets, capsules, pills, liquid, poison, blood, bleeding, CPR, mouth to mouth, breathing, conscious, unconscious, pulse, fever, (review of all body parts), alone, age, family, (review of all family members), robbery, beating, abuse, etc.

Text Books

Harris County Department of Education’s Blue Curriculum Book – Level 1.

Activity/Procedures

Warm-Up Activity (15-30 min. suggested time)

Divide students in to groups. Access prior knowledge by having the groups discuss any personnel experience (or familiar) to 911 calls.

Extension: List real 911 situations (life threatening) vs. non-911 situations (not life threatening).

Introduction: (1 to 1 ½ hours suggested time)

State the lesson’s objective. Introduce vocabulary. Using the overhead transparencies have students as a whole group identify non-emergency and emergency situations. Have them describe what they see happening in a few examples. Teacher will model a 911 call to class.
