Activity/Procedures: Warm Up -Cloze exercise on procedures for Heimlich Maneuver on overhead projector. Students write procedures in journal. Must fill in adj., adv., and prep. Check answers. Introduction - Students brainstorm and explain a medical emergency they have encountered. Discuss first aid supplies used before the EMS arrived (if called). |

Presentation: ExpressWays 3, P.94 Students and teacher select one of five scenarios from the bottom ½ of the page. Teacher writes on sentence strips an accident report generated by the students. Organize the sentence strips. Correct them for complete sentences. Reread report chorally as modeled by the teacher. Practice -A group of three students selects one of the four remaining scenarios. Write an accident report modeled on the previous activity. |

Evaluation/Assessment: For homework, students read a newspaper article reporting a medical emergency. Answer the teacher generated questions. List essential supplies needed for first aid kit in journal. Watch video-Dr. Heimlich’s first aid kit portion. Review list. Put together a personal first aid kit for homework and real life. |
