Context: Community
Standard(s): Speak So Others Can Understand
Benchmark(s): 1.1, 3.1
Objective: To learn basic information about others.

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 15 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 6 hours (3 hour twice a week)
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Review words that will help students be able to respond to personal information
and basic needs. Ask students to brainstorm situations when they had
to give personal information about themselves.
Teach the lesson:
To teach students strategies of communicating basic information about
themselves, use an activity called “The Name Game.” Students
will identify a descriptive word that begins with the same letter as
their first name. For example: Lucky Lucy, Sexy Sofia, Happy Hope,
etc.
Practice the lesson:
Identify basic information that students need to know to communicate
to others. For example, full name, address, city, zip code, phone number,
sex, place of birth, how many children they have, ages of children,
etc. Each student will interview three classmates, document this information,
and present the information to the class.
Assess the lesson:
As students present the information to the class, the students interviewed
will confirm the accuracy of the information that is being presented.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students should gain more confidence in engaging in small talk when going
to the grocery store, the mall or other public places where personal
information may be needed.
