The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Introduce students to unfamiliar terms that relate to purchasing large
retail items. Some of these might include “rain check” “extended
warranty,” “refund,” “MSRP,” etc.
Teach the lesson:
Discuss with students the significance of comparison shopping when making
large purchases. Include discussion on purchasing service agreements,
extended warranties, delivery prices, and finding discounts on multiple
purchases.
Practice the lesson:
Plan a field trip to a local retail or appliance store and allow students
to connect the vocabulary and terms to consumer situation. Another
trip might be planned where students can experience making buying choices
in a restaurant or other dining experience.
Assess the lesson:
After the field trip, each student should make an individual presentation
that describes their experience. Teacher feedback should be given to
reinforce student understanding.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students should be able to locate the items that are suitable to the
need and their income level.
