Before you begin

Title: Birthday Party

Setting: ESL

Standard(s): Speak So Others Can Understand

Benchmark(s): 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.2

Objective: To explain the activities at a child’s birthday party

Materials: Dry-erase board, markers, pictures

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 10 minutes

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 90 minutes

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
Talk about birthday vocabulary: candle, invitation, cake, etc). Discuss the differences between celebrations of birthdays in learners’ different cultures.

Teach the lesson:
Find out which learners’ children have a birthday this month. Ask what materials are needed for a child’s birthday party.

Practice the lesson:
Learners will discuss in groups how they celebrate a child’s birthday in their culture.

Assess the lesson:
Instructor will visit each group to see if everyone is on task. Learners will present in front of classroom and give examples of different activities and sing happy birthday song in their language. Instructor will give sentence dictation and spelling of words.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Learners should go home and convey information about different celebrations to family members
