The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Review parts of the body and play “Simon Says.” Review basic
symptoms and play bingo. As a class, discuss previous experiences students
have had making a doctor’s appointment. Discuss reasons for making
an appointment.
Teach the lesson:
The teacher will distribute a sample prescription between the nurse and
a potential patient. The teacher (having the patient role) and another
student will model the dialogue. Have the whole class repeat - focusing
on proper pronunciation. Review any unfamiliar vocabulary on OHP or
board. Students practice dialogue in pairs, switching roles.
Practice the lesson:
The teacher will distribute similar script worksheets with blanks for
the students to fill in their own information. Teacher will give feedback
as necessary. Students will practice their personalized dialogues in
pairs (using one of the student’s dialogues for a while and then
switching to the other student’s dialogue).
Assess the lesson:
Students will participate in an impromptu role play with the teacher,
achieving 80% accuracy answering questions. This can be done individually
or cooperatively as determined by the instructor.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students can apply this less to any real-world situation where making
a doctor’s appointment is necessary.
