Context: Academic
Standard(s): Speak So Others Can Understand
Benchmark(s): 1.2, 2.2
Objective: To use pronouns to form sentences that address everyday activities.
Materials: Handout (Using Pronouns in Daily Activities pages 3-5 of this lesson), paper and pencils
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 15 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: Several class periods
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
The teacher asks the class (in Spanish) to say (in English) certain daily
activities using pronouns. As students respond in English, the teacher
should correct the student as appropriate.
Teach the lesson:
The teacher distributes copies of the handout. The teacher reads and
pronounces each daily activity about 4 times. The teacher will ask
the class to repeat the daily activity 3 times. During this process,
the teacher walks around the room and listens for proper pronunciation.
If needed, the teacher may ask individual students to repeat the word
for proper pronunciation. The teacher explains to the class that the
daily activities on the left side of the handout are used for sentences
involving the pronouns I, We, You, They. The teacher explains
that the daily activities on the right are for sentences involving
personal nouns and names. The teacher further explains that “he” could
be used for a male name or a male; “she” could be used
for a female name or female, and “it” could be used for
an animal, place or thing.
Practice the lesson:
Working in pairs, students create sentences by inserting pronouns from
both sections of the handout.
Assess the lesson:
Teacher observation and feedback.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students utilize this lesson by incorporating newly learned phrases into
everyday conversation.
