Objective: To read, understand and follow medication instructions.
Materials: Boxes of real medication (OTC and prescription), worksheet (table for multiple medication information), OHP and transparencies.
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 30 minutes - 1 hour
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 2 hours
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Discuss different types of medications (Over the counter and prescription),
forms of medications (liquid, spray, cream, tablets, etc.), and containers
medications are in as a class.
Teach the lesson:
Give copies of medication instructions to class and discuss components
of the instructions (usage, side effects, and warnings). Review unfamiliar
vocabulary and introduce new vocabulary.
Practice the lesson:
Give pairs a box of real (but empty) medication and have them answer
questions about product on worksheet table. Have groups present their
medication to the class; the class listens and writes down on their
worksheet information about the others groups’ medication.
Assess the lesson:
Teacher will look at each group’s information on the own medication.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students can apply this less to any real world situation where using/reading
medication/labels is appropriate.
