Before you begin

Title: Finding Life’s Necessities

Setting: ESL

Objective: To be able to find places that offers everyday necessities for free or at a low cost.

Materials: Used telephone books,chalkboard, phone book, pen, and pencil

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 1 hour

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 24 hours (3 hours once a day for eight days)

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
Have the class brainstorm how they locate information about services that provide assistance such as food and clothing banks. Explain to the class how to identify words that are associated with services they need and how to look up the telephone number to obtain these services.

Teach the lesson:
This lesson focuses on using 2-1-1 Texas, First Call for Help. If computers are available students should access the 2-1-1 website https://www.211texas.org/211/ Point out to students that this website provides information regarding: food, shelter, rent assistance, utility bill assistance, child care, after-school programs, senior service, etc. Explain to students how to locate the link within the website that translates to Spanish.

Practice the lesson:
Distribute copies of the phone books and have each student lookup the telephone number and local address of a local attorney or agency that will help them with their immigration papers. Have students keep a log of words and vocabulary they encounter that are unfamiliar.

Assess the lesson:
Each student will share the information they located from the phone books. Based on this oral presentation, teacher will provide feedback to each student individually.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Student should be able to recognize ways to locate assistance for everyday necessities.
