Before you begin

Objective: To locate places on a map.
Materials: City maps, telephone books, sticky tabs, pens and overheads of map sections
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 30 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: Two 45 minute sessionsThe Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Why do you need to know how to read a map? Where do you want to go? How do you
find that place?
Teach the lesson:
1. Introduce the parts of the maps
2. Model locating a site
Practice the lesson:
Session 1: Divide students into pairs to locate various addresses. Students
determine the places they want to locate.
Session 2: Students will show conclusions to assignment in Session One
Access the Lesson:
Ask students how to find assigned locations. Each student is assigned
a different location.
Apply lesson to the real world:
Have students locate places important to them and designate them on their
maps with sticky strips (school, church, etc.).
