Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 2 hours

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 1 hour and 15 minutes

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
As a class, review basic direction nouns (street, corner, intersection, left, right, access road, traffic lift, overpass). Review basic direction verbs (turn, go, stop, pass, cross). Review basic prepositions of place (around, next to, behind, in, on, under, between, in front of, etc. ).

Teach the lesson:
Select a location on the neighborhood map that most students would be familiar with, such as a grocery store, hospital or school. Give the class verbal directions from the location of the class to the selected location without telling them their destination. Use gestures and words as if in a real situation. Repeat as necessary for students needing clarification.

Practice the lesson:
Select another location. This time give basic directions without using additional cues. If time permits, have students form groups and give the rest of the class directions to a location they choose.

Assess the lesson:
Determine whether students were able to follow directions and “arrive” at the selected destinations. Assess correctness of directions student groups give.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students should gain confidence in asking for and clarifying directions in realistic situations.
