Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 1.5 hours
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Start by getting everyone’s attention and saying a sentence with
many contracted words, such as y’all, gonna and learnin’.
Discuss contracted language and its use in every-day situations.
Teach the lesson:
The class will watch a video on home repair. Provide each student with
a manuscript of the video with vocabulary and contracted words removed
and replaced with blanks. Watch the video and ask students to fill
in the missing words. As a class, discuss the missing words and how
they are pronounced in natural speech, as opposed to “proper” speech.
Practice the lesson:
The class will watch the video again with the correct words filled in.
Ask students to pay special attention to the way contracted words are
pronounced.
Assess the lesson:
Each student will demonstrate learning by reporting how many blanks they
were able to fill in correctly and identifying the meanings of the
reviewed contracted words.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Identifying contracted words can be used to understand how to listen
for and decode casual language during everyday communication.
