Objective: To aid and prepare students for understanding menu selections, clarification questions, and ordering.
Materials: Menus, dictionaries, handout, board, pictures, realia
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 45 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 2-3 hours presentation
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Introduce vocabulary using the title page of a menu. Discuss parts of
the menu. Write vocabulary on the board using pictures and realia. Students’ personal
experience will come up naturally in the discussion.
Teach the lesson:
Model stock dialog. Volunteers read and the teacher responds to
the questions.
Practice the lesson:
Group work: A section of the menu is assigned to each group. Group
members read the assigned section of the menu discussing vocabulary and
looking up unfamiliar words. Students discuss what to order then
write and practice their own dialogs.
Assess the lesson:
Students present their dialogs to the class
Apply the lesson to the real world:
The students will be able to go to a restaurant and order from the menu
in English.
