Before you begin

Title: Tuning In

Setting: ESL

Standard(s): Listen actively

Benchmark(s): 1.2, 2.2

Objective: The students will: 1) become aware of English radio stations in their community; and 2) become exposed to various genre of American music.

Materials: Radio, music journal

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 15 minutes

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 1 hour

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
Have the students survey each other. “What station do you listen to?” and develop a class graph of how many students listen to which radio stations.

Teach the lesson:
Turn on a radio, identify call numbers, and listen for styles-genre of music record stations.

Practice the lesson:
Listen to a song on the radio. Have the students work as a group and have them call out vocabulary they hear and are familiar with.

Assess the lesson:
Have the students write down the new words and unfamiliar words that they heard on the radio.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Have each student chose a radio station and keep track of new and unfamiliar words by writing them in a journal.
