The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
Play the selected song to get the students’ initial impression. Review general music vocabulary with class to introduce the lesson (e.g song title, lyrics, cover, remake, verse). Review words or phrases used in the song.

Teach the lesson:
As a class, provide students with lyrics of the song, removing words or phrases students may not be familiar with and replacing them with blanks. Allow the class to listen to the song and see if they can identify the missing words. Then provide students with lyrics. Discuss answers and see how many the students were able to identify correctly.

Practice the lesson:
Allow the class to listen to the song again with all blanks filled in correctly.

Assess the lesson:
As a class, students will report how many words they identified correctly. Students will also report understanding of the song’s overall meaning.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Identifying casual language can be used to understand how to listen for and decode casual language during everyday communication.
