Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 15 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 9 hours (3 hours once a week for 3 weeks)
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Begin discussion by asking the class what type of writings they are most
interested in and concerned about. Describe to the class different
forms of writing, placing emphasis on structured and stylized reports
such as book reports. Point out to students that most structured forms
of writing involve obtaining resources from the library.
Teach the lesson:
This lesson will involve visiting a school library or a local public
library. During visit, students will apply for library cards and will
be given a guided tour of the library.
Practice the lesson:
Assign each student the task of finding a book on a topic of interest.
The book should be one that they have not yet read. The book can be
either fiction or non-fiction, written in English, and can be any length.
The student should check the book from the library. After reading the
book, each student will write a report answering the following questions:
What is the name of the book?
Who wrote the book?
Is the book fiction or non-fiction?
What was the book about?
What did you like (or not like) about the book?
Students should be allowed time in class to write their reports.
Assess the lesson:
Teacher will read and correct the book reports and return to students
for revision. Students will turn in reports again for final review
by teacher.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students should gain learning on how to use the library as a resource.
This will help them in future research assignments, family literacy
activities, and personal enrichment.
