The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Discuss with the class the steps in writing a paper, such as sequential
paragraphs that reveal a thesis paragraph and the conclusion.
Teach the lesson:
As a class, students observe picture(s) from magazines or books. Students
are asked to explain the person in the picture: what are their likes,
dislikes, needs, wants, how does they live their lives, explain if
the person is happy or unhappy, content or miserable. If they are married,
single, or divorced. Does the person in the picture have children?
If so, how many? What is their occupation and what are their functions
at work? The students are then given a depiction of the person’s
life for a day or a lifetime. The students are asked to identify the
main idea of their story, paragraphs, and sentences as well as their
main focus on the thesis sentence.
Practice the lesson:
Individually, students write a paragraph related to the pictures they
observed. The students are asked to identify the main idea of their
story, paragraphs, and sentences. The students are expected to go through
each sentence and write the most important sentence as a “topic
sentence,” using at least two to three: who, what, where, why,
when or how. Individually, students work on writing their paragraphs
at the beginning of class. When the paragraph(s) are completed, students
are given the option of working on another paragraph to practice the
lesson and reinforce learning.
Assess the learning lesson:
Each time the student finishes with their paragraphs, the teacher should
review with each student to provide feedback. After pointing out corrections
to be made, students are given opportunity to rewrite their papers.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students can apply the learning from lesson to writing paragraphs that
are acceptable for standardized testing.
