The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
As a class, discuss the intent and purpose of the Geneva Conventions. As discussion starters, the teacher might as an example how Iraqis are treated, and discuss whether students feel the U. S. is in compliance with the Geneva Conventions. Another discussion starter might be whether the students feel the Geneva Conventions apply to what is happening with Iraq?

Teach the lesson:
Distribute copies of the Summary Fact Sheet on the Geneva Conventions. Decode unfamiliar words that appear in the text. Students should be instructed to create a personal vocabulary list and record unfamiliar words on a blank sheet of paper. Discuss the fact sheet with the class drawing special attention to specific articles in each convention. Ask specific questions relevant to each article. Further discussions will likely emerge.

Practice the lesson:
Divide class into groups. Assign each group a current event news article to read, discuss, and present findings to the class. During this process students continue to decode and search for new words and add these words to their personal vocabulary list.

Assess the lesson:
A teacher made assessment teacher made test consisting of 20 questions and based on the Summary Fact Sheet on the Geneva Conventions.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students should be able to follow world news relating to Geneva Conventions or other world events.
