Objective: To gain mathematical competency and apply to everyday personal and business financial situations

Materials: Menus from local restaurants, paper and pencil, lesson outline, flip-flash math (decimals)

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 15 minutes

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: (4) 45 minute lecture sessions and (4) 30 minute tutoring sessions.

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
Review the fundamental concepts of decimals and how they behave.

Teach the lesson:
The teacher will demonstrate decimal calculations to the whole class using the flip flash math cards.

Practice the lesson:
Have students bring in several menus from local restaurants. Students will be divided into groups and using the collected menus, will simulate having an extravagant meal at an elegant restaurant. Each group will create a collective check. Each group will divide the check into equal portions so that each person is paying the same amount.

Assess the lesson:
Oral and written responses to teacher developed quizzes.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
After completing this lesson, students should be able to calculate decimals and use these computations in personal and business situations.
