The Lesson Plan
Introduce the Lesson:
As a class, ask students to brainstorm situations they have needed to
increase or reduce the measurements of something.
Teach the Lesson:
Provide visual representations of fractions (e.g. pies and rectangle
segmentations).
Practice the lesson:
Students will individually complete an activity “Fractions, Ratio,
and Proportion in the Kitchen.” The student will be given a recipe
and instructed to double and triple the measurements.
Assess the lesson:
Individually, students will be given a real world problem situation that
requires manipulation of fraction skills and that will demonstrate
problem solving strategies. Responses will be made orally and in writing.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Lesson is beneficial for learning meal planning for large groups of people.
In addition, this lesson is useful for making home repairs (e.g. window
measurements).
