The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
This is the first in a series of three lessons that will teach students how to build catapults. This lesson will focus on using measuring instruments. Discuss with class the history of the catapult, physics and Newton’s law, and measuring data using the mean, median, and mode.

Teach the lesson:
As a class, students are introduced to practical job skills on how to utilize rulers, yard sticks and measuring tapes. Measuring rooms in the house or office is a skill that can be useful.

Practice the lesson:
Students are individually assigned the task of measuring at least two rooms in their homes and reporting back their findings. As an additional task, students might be asked to develop a simple plan they could use to reorganize their rooms to save space.

Assess the lesson:
Students individually report back the outcomes of their individual tasks. For example, students might document the measurements of the room and present to the class. Or, students might bring before and after pictures rooms they have reorganized.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students can apply learning to other situations such as replacing carpet in the home or office, assisting children with their homework, or many other simple tasks around the home or office.
