Objective: To use apply knowledge of fractions to daily activities such as cooking.
Materials: Copies of the recipe for each student, paper pencils
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 15 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 1 hour
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Discuss with students how often they have to increase or reduce their
favorite recipe.
Teach the lesson:
As a class, demonstrate to student simple math problems that use the
symbols (x, ÷) and words that represent those symbols for multiplication
and division.
Practice the lesson:
Distribute copies of a recipe to each student. Instruct the students
to 1) convert the recipe to ½ of the original portions, and
then 2) convert the recipe to 2x the original portions. As a class,
discuss the changes made to the recipe, come to consensus of the correct
amounts, then record the correct measurements.
Assess the lesson:
Discussion of the correct measurements with teacher feedback.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students should be able to perform conversions to suit their individual
needs.
