Before you begin
Title: Introduction to Perimeter

Benchmark(s): 4.2, 6.2, 7.2
Objective: To calculate the perimeter of polygons.
Materials: String, rulers, index cards, overheads, markers, projector, scissors
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 30 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 1 hour and 30 minutes
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Review various geometric figures (two-dimensional). Review related terms- length, width, etc. Identify real-world examples of these figures.
Teach the lesson:
As a class, choose a shape for a garden. Teacher models measuring and computing perimeter. Use both rulers and string.
Practice the lesson:
Students select real-life applications in pairs. Use index cards to cut appropriate shapes and measure their perimeters.
Assess the lesson:
Students present models to class and teacher gives feedback.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Encourage students to find applications of perimeter at home and at work in their everyday lives.
