Texas Adult Education Standards
Lesson Plan
Before you begin
Title: Different Slopes for Different Folks
Setting: ABE/ASE
NRS Level(s):
Level 5: Low Adult Secondary Education
Level 6: High Adult Secondary Education
Open entry/exit: Yes
Context: Community
Standard(s): Use Math to Solve Problems and Communicate
Benchmark(s): 3.5, 3.6
Objective: To identify, graph, and find positive and negative slope as well as use the y-intercept formula to graph the equation and find the distance between the points.
Materials: White board/markers, pencils, graph paper, slope intercept formula and distance formula
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 10 minutes
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 2 hours
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Rene Descartes, a famous Frenchman, was a drunk. During one of his stupors,
he lay on the couch and saw the cracks in the ceiling and the flies moving from
one crack to another and Ah-Ha… He invented the coordinate grid.
Teach the lesson:
You will identify the positive and negative slopes from the worksheet
and illustrate the y-intercept and distance formulas as well as graph
the formulas.
Practice the lesson:
Get into small groups and practice with examples to determine the negative
and positive slopes. Use both formulas to graph equations.
Assess the lesson:
Each group will discuss their findings with the other groups.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
The slope is found in weather reports, in geography (how high does the
water tank have to be on the hill in order to gravity feed water into
the stock tank), in the Census Bureau, and construction (stairs).
