Materials: Whiteboard, markers, paper, ruler, tape measure, formula worksheet

The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Have students discuss why or when they need to know the area of a room.
Teach the lesson:
Show examples of how to find the area of a rectangle. Use step-by-step
instructions and illustrate the steps on the board.
Practice the lesson:
Pretend that you need new carpet for the classroom. Have students
measure the room and calculate the area. Ask students to find five
additional rectangular objects in the room and calculate the area.
Assess the lesson:
Students will compare their calculations to ensure accuracy.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students will generate ideas on how calculating the area of rectangles
can be helpful in their lives.
