Before you begin

Title: My New Living Room Carpet

Setting: ABE/ASE

Standard(s): Use Math to Solve Problems and Communicate

Benchmark(s): 6.4, 7.4

Objective: To learn how to specify an order for carpet of an irregularly shaped room

Materials: Measuring tape; graph paper; rulers; textbook with mathematical references (formulas)

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 30 minutes

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 2 hours

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
Discuss how carpet is sold.  Ask various questions about carpet installation.

Teach the lesson:
Review key terms with students. Use textbook to introduce formulas (esp. “area”)

Practice the lesson:
Learner groups will measure the “living room” (classroom).  They should give measurements in square feet and square yards.

Assess the lesson:
Compare measurements with other groups to ascertain accuracy.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Get a newspaper and find out the price of installing carpet based on advertisements.
