Before you begin

Title: Calendar Skills

Setting:  ABE/ASE

NRS Level(s): Level 1: Beginning ABE Literacy

Open entry/exit:  Yes

Context:  Academic

Standard(s):  Use Math to Solve Problems and Communicate

Benchmark(s): 1.1

Objective:  To count using whole numbers.    

Materials:  Weekly blank calendar or magnetic board with magnetic numbers

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan:  30 minutes

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan:  45 minutes

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
Talk to students about how magnetic numbers will be used to count to seven by using days of the week.

Teach the lesson:
Illustrate each number. Practice identifying whole number. Have groups of items and select the proper magnetic number. .

Practice the lesson: 
Place numbers on the calendar in proper order.

Assess the lesson:
Evaluate each student’s performance and evaluate the concept. Was it easy for the students to understand?

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Dialing the phone, address, real calendar, Social Security number, etc.
