Before you begin

Title: Have I Been Short Changed?

Setting:  ABE /ASE

Standard(s):  Use Math to Solve Problems and Communicate

Benchmark(s): 5.2

Objective:  To count and make change using U.S. coins and currency up to $1. 

Materials:  Play money, sales ads, and take-out menus.

Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan:  15-30 minutes

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan:  1 hour to 1.5 hours

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson: 
Review the value of the U.S. currency up to $1.00.  

Teach the lesson:
Create a shopping list and price the items.

Practice the lesson: 
Students will role play cashier and customer by purchasing items and making change.

Assess the lesson:
Instructor feedback is given as a group during role play. 

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students can apply this lesson to any real world situation involving money.
