Objective: To apply measurement skills to tasks related to home maintenance.

Materials: Chalkboard, chalk, a variety of measurement tools and pictures of others, paper, pencil, rulers for each student

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
As a class, discuss household tasks that require measuring. Emphasize measurement skills needed to perform tasks associated with home décor, painting, laying carpet, making draperies, etc.

Teach the lesson:
Pose the following question to the entire class “Which tool would you use to measure the number of feet of baseboard that will be needed for a room?” Illustrate a folding tape measuring tool used for room measurements. Measure a wall in the classroom or some other object to demonstrate to students how to obtain measurements. Record the measurements on the board.

Practice the lesson:
Using rulers, each student will measure an object in the classroom. Then as a whole class, have the students report their measurements.

Assess the lesson:
Peer feedback and documentation of the process.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students will gain skills necessary to accurately measure items in the home.
