Objective: To calculate the area of a room for flooring or carpeting.

Materials: Tape measure, poster board, markers, pencils, calculator, photos of different types of rooms.

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 1 hour

The Lesson Plan

Introduce the lesson:
As a class, explain how lesson will be beneficial to student. Review with the class common formulas for area.

Teach the lesson:
To the class, illustrate photos of different types of rooms. Instructor will explain how to use a tape measure.

Practice the lesson:
Each student will measure sections in the classroom to find the square footage for flooring or carpeting.

Assess the lesson:
The students use poster board to illustrate room they measured, showing the dimensions used in calculating the area.

Apply the lesson to the real world:
The students will measure their rooms in their home.
