The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
As a class, discuss the different types of home repairs that go into
maintaining a house or an apartment. Show the class a video clip (Bob
Vila, HGTV) of individuals measuring a room to determine how many pieces
of molding are needed – this clip needs to highlight before
and after shots of the room.
Teach the lesson:
Review perimeter, measuring tools; measure the table or desk; and report
answers to model.
Practice the lesson:
In pairs, choose a room to measure and figure the perimeter. Higher level
students can use decimals and fractions.
Assess the lesson:
Teacher observation and student feedback on how many pieces of wood are
needed for molding the different rooms.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Measure a room at their house and determine how many pieces of wood would
be needed for molding.
