Context: Community

Benchmark(s): 6.2, 7.2
Objective: To identify tools used to measure and calculate the perimeter: length, and volume.
Materials: Ruler, formula sheet, measuring tape, yard stick, paper, colored pencils, and construction paper.
Estimated time needed to prepare for this lesson plan: 1 hour
Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 1- 2 hours
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
Speak to the students about measurement and measuring things: i.e, How
tall are you? How far is your house? How big is your house?
Teach the lesson:
Show the different tools of measurement to the students. Explain perimeter,
volume, and area, and then explain how these tools can be used to figure
out perimeter, volume, and area.
Practice the lesson:
Have students in small groups cut out different shapes of construction
paper to create a garden on a piece of paper. Then have the students
determine the area, volume, and perimeter of the garden.
Assess the lesson:
Teachers will check periodically to see if the students understand how
to measure and use the measuring tools.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Students will gain confidence with using different measuring tools to
determine area, volume, and perimeter which they can apply.
