Before you begin
Title: Around the House

Objective: To determine amount of carpet/floor tiles for student’s home.
Materials: Carpet/tile samples, floor plans, graph paper, and measuring tools (ruler, yard stick, measuring tape)

Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 2—3 hours
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
As a class, discuss remodeling/updating your home. Have the students
review samples of flooring.
Teach the lesson:
Place the students into small groups and have the groups talk about types
of flooring for different rooms in a home. Discuss shapes, measurement
terms, estimation, area formulas, square feet and yards.
Practice the lesson:
Using graph paper, plot 2 rooms in home. Group selects flooring type
to use.
Assess the lesson:
Have students figure amount of flooring and cost for a select room in
class.
Apply the lesson to the real world:
Have student choose a room in their home to figure amount and cost of
flooring they select. Estimate the amount and cost of selection.
