Estimated time needed to complete this lesson plan: 2 hours
The Lesson Plan
Introduce the lesson:
As a class, review percents and proportions. Define and discuss savings
price and sales price.
Teach the lesson:
Model a problem to the class using a current sales ad. Choose 2 items
that have a % discount showing. Demonstrate to students how to calculate
the savings. Have students subtract the savings from the original price.
Point out how to add the sales prices together to get the total price.
Then ask the question, Does the answer make sense?
Practice the lesson:
Hand out sales ads to everyone. Choose at least 3 items on sale with
a % discount. Calculate the savings and sale price. Calculate the total
price. Ask for volunteers to share what they “bought.” Hand
out worksheets so that students can individually continue the practice.
Assess the lesson:
Teacher-made “quiz” (three or four problems) to determine
mastery of the skill; teacher observation
Apply the lesson to the real world:
After the lesson, students should be able to calculate sales prices on
items when they are shopping to determine the best deal.
